Valerie Grimes, Hypnotist at Dallas Hypnosis Programs, explores perceptions of electronic messaging vs spoken words.

Phrases and certain words can be interpreted differently in electronically produced communication (such as a Facebook post) because the context, a personal history with the author, and tone are missing. In order to properly understand the real meaning of a phrase, it helps to know the author so you understand where they are “coming from”. But adding to that, one’s perception of a phrase or statement can take on new meaning based on the way the person assigns meaning to that phrase.

Recently I wrote on Facebook that I was disappointed in Florida because the local flare had given way to mega stores and national chains. And that is disappointing, because town to town, our country is becoming homogenous, in my opinion. However, I was “merely” disappointed, not “my whole trip is ruined” disappointed, but enjoyed the Florida experience. The disappointment lasted two minutes.

Based on your perception, which is shaped by your experience, your views, your values, and your opinions, the phrase “I’m disappointed” could range from, “you did a bad thing” to “I feel shame that I’m wrong” to “well then, to heck with you”. The statement “I’m disappointed” could bring up shame, sadness, anger, etc based on the meaning you assigned to it as a child.

In hypnosis, perceptions are often times the obstacle for people to move towards something new. For example if you want to shed weight, but your perception is that food means love, it could be very difficult. If your desire to double your salary is based on the perception that money is the root of evil, you might never attain that goal for the long term.

Next time you are on Facebook, notice how people respond to posts, bring awareness to the fact that they are responding based on perceptions, which were formed over time based on their life experience. Discuss with your family or friends their perception of the term “I’m Dissapointed”, what response do they feel when they hear that phrase?
