As a hypnotist, I like to teach my clients about how to become aware of a pattern and then interrupt that pattern by creating a new action which eventually breaks the old pattern. This can be a physical pattern in the form of a habit, or a pattern of thought.
It is the conscious realization that you are about to do something that is subconscious and perhaps counter-productive. For example if you have a smoking habit and during the process of quitting you become more aware of your habitual patterns you can interrupt them and break the neural pathway that is creating the subsequent behavior.
Here is an example of how to break a pattern of thought in regards to one’s outlook on health.
If your thought pattern is to always complain about being sick, and you normally say, “I’m sick again, doctor says I have the flu, I get one every year.”
The way to interrupt that would be to say, “This year, I’m experiencing the flu, next year I’m staying healthy”. See of that how shifts it?
Here are some other examples of breaking thinking patterns, you can shift your statement from ‘I Always’ to ‘Sometimes I Do’. Or use this statement “I used to ________ & now I _________.”
For smokers, simply moving the place where the cigarettes are kept can cause the smoker to stop and notice that they have to think about where the cigarettes are now, and in doing so consider whether or not they really need one. I have clients keep the cigarettes outside in their cars…if it is raining or cold, they usually decide “it is too much trouble”. That interrupts the pattern and if used consistently can assist a person in changing the habit.
